Motivation is life’s greatest lie — How high achievers get it done!
It’s true, there are situations where getting psyched about something can skyrocket your productivity, but it’s a bad day-to-day strategy to get things done!
Since I started my journey to improve my productivity, the concept of motivation has always been present. As a procrastinator myself, I long for that energy burst to start crossing off tasks on my daily list. However, it is one of the ficklest things in the Universe…
Jeff Haden (writer of The Motivation Myth) said: whatever your objective is, focus on the process. Create a list of your daily tasks and work diligently to complete them. The act of crossing those milestones from your list will help defeat procrastination and, once those tasks become a habit, willpower and motivation will no longer play a role in whether you complete your work or not.
And I totally agree. Big goals are daunting! Whether it’s trying to deadlift a crazy amount of weight, study for an exam, or write a thesis, if we don’t divide goals like these into small tasks, we tend to procrastinate like crazy! So I’ve followed Jeff’s advice! I started to chop down my work and I’ve found that my procrastination becomes much easier to govern and I’ve stopped relying on motivation to get work done.
In summary, motivation is trying to feel like doing stuff. Discipline is doing it even if you don’t feel like it. — https://www.wisdomination.com/screw-motivation-what-you-need-is-discipline/
